The story of Hunan railway construction should start from a hundred years ago.
In 1894, Zhang Zhidong, Wang Wenshao, Sheng Xuanhuai and others wrote to the court to build the Luhan Railway (Lugou Bridge to Hankou, later changed to Beijing-Han Railway). In the memorial, it was stated that when the Luhan Railway was completed, it would extend from Hankou to Guangzhou in the south, and the railway from Hankou to Guangzhou would be the Yuehan Railway. In 1896, after the establishment of the railway corporation led by the government in the late Qing Dynasty, the construction of the Guangdong-Han Railway was formally put on the agenda.
Moreover, under the proposal of Hunan gentry at that time, the Guangdong-Han railway was diverted from Jiangxi south to Hunan south at the beginning of planning. The Guangdong-Han Railway passes through Hunan Province, and the mileage in Hunan accounts for nearly 60% of the total mileage. The Hunan Industrial Records published in 1935 wrote: "After the completion of the Hunan-Hubei section of the Guangdong-Han Railway, the commercial status of Changsha has become more important. The former Yuezhou and Xiangtan have declined, and Changsha has gradually become the confluence of goods import and export in Hunan Province."
In April 1936, the Guangdong-Han Railway was opened to traffic, from Changsha to Wuchang. At that time, the express train only took 15 hours. Later, this traffic trunk line, known as the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, had a profound impact on Hunan’s economic and social changes and cultural and historical features.
In the second year, the Hunan-Guizhou Railway, a major project with the longest time, the most arduous engineering task and the most manpower input, was opened. Until 1972, after the war and economic difficulties, the whole line was finally achieved in the national struggle.
This 902-kilometer-long railway "artery", which winds 550.7 kilometers in Hunan, intersects with Zhiliu Railway in Huaihua, and connects with Beijing-Guangzhou and zhejiang-jiangxi railway in Zhuzhou, thus opening up a main road from the southwest to the eastern coastal areas, which is of great significance for connecting China’s east-west traffic, developing western Hunan and even southwest China.
In Hunan, the pace of railway construction has accelerated, and high-speed rail construction has been put on the agenda.
In 2009, the Wuhan-Guangzhou section of Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway was opened for operation, with a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, and Hunan officially entered the high-speed rail era;
In 2014, the Hunan section of the Shanghai-Kunming high-speed railway was opened for operation, and it shook hands with the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway at Changsha South Station, forming a "golden cross";
In 2018, Huaishaoheng Railway was opened for operation, and Changsha, Huaihua and Hengyang formed the "Golden Triangle" of Hunan high-speed rail;

At present, the railway mileage in the province reaches 5,877 kilometers, of which the operating mileage of high-speed rail is about 2,233 kilometers, ranking among the top in the country. With Changsha as the center, a high-speed rail traffic circle of 5, 4, 3, 2 hours and 2 hours in the province will basically be formed.
In-depth participation promotes the improvement of Hunan railway map.
From the crowded green leather train to the spacious and comfortable Fuxing, from the long-distance bumps to the high-speed rail, the scale and quality of the railway network have been greatly improved, the status of Hunan Province as a transportation hub has become increasingly prominent, the tentacles of economic development have extended in all directions, cultural exchange activities have become more frequent, and people’s travel has become convenient and comfortable.
Behind the leap in quantity and quality of Hunan railway network, there is an important participant-Hunan Railway Construction Investment Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Hunan Railway Investment") under Hunan Railway Group. It is reported that among the 22 railway projects invested by Hunan Railway Group on behalf of the province, Hunan Railway Investment directly participated in 16 projects, and Hunan Railway Investment successively participated in Hengliu Passenger Dedicated Line, Jiheng Railway, Shichang Double Line, Loushao Expansion and Reform, Shanghai-Kunming Passenger Dedicated Line Hangchang Section, Shanghai-Kunming Passenger Specialized Line Kunming Section, Xiangxiang Railway Station, Huaishaoheng Railway, Changsha Maglev Railway, Haoji Railway, Qianzhangchang Railway, Zhangjihuai Railway, and Shanghai-Kunming Passenger Specialized Line Kunming Railway. Sixteen projects in the province have a total mileage of 2,913 kilometers and a total investment of 280.6 billion yuan. At present, 14 projects have been completed and opened to traffic.
Hunan Railway Investment resolutely implements the decision-making arrangements of the provincial party committee, the provincial government, the provincial state-owned assets supervision and administration commission and the party committee of Hunan Railway Group, and earnestly pays attention to railway investment. In 2019 and 2020, the investment exceeded 10 billion for two consecutive years, helping "six stabilities and six guarantees", effectively hedging the impact of the epidemic, effectively ensuring the smooth progress of railway construction in the province and promoting the economic and social development of our province.
As far as Hunan Railway Investment Corporation is concerned, the newly opened Zhangjihuai high-speed railway is of special significance. It is a railway mainly funded by the provincial side, which means that the company has played a "leading role" in Hunan railway construction investment. Zhang Jihuai High-speed Railway was officially started in December 2016, with a design speed of 350 kilometers per hour, which is 246.6 kilometers long, connecting Zhangjiajie, Yongshun, Guzhang, Jishou, Fenghuang and Huaihua, marking the mysterious Xiangxi officially entering the "high-speed rail era".
This year, Hunan Railway Investment Co., Ltd. gave full play to the role of provincial investors and boosted the construction of railway projects in the special action of Hunan Railway Group’s "Decisive Battle for 100 Days, Decisive Battle for the First Year, Sprint for the Target". On the southeast side of Zhangjihuai Railway, the capacity expansion project of Yongzhou area of Xianggui Railway is speeding up. By the end of November, the investment of Hunan Railway Investment Kailai has reached 475 million yuan, and the project is about to open to traffic. The project includes the construction of the third line from the southern end of the original Yijiaqiao Station of Xianggui Railway to the southern end of Yongzhou Station in Yongzhou area, the construction of Yizhan Railway from the southern end of Yongzhou North Station to the southern end of Yongzhou, the construction of Yongzhou North Station, Yongzhou North Logistics Center and Yongzhou North Locomotive Turn-back Section, and the simultaneous implementation of the existing Yongzhou Station station reform and other related projects. There are three stations on the whole line: Wangjiapai Station, Yongzhou North Station and Yongzhou Station.
The construction of Changyichang Railway is also in full swing. As the first high-speed railway in Hunan province to implement investment sharing between provinces and cities, in the early stage of construction, Hunan Railway Investment Co., Ltd., in accordance with the principle of seeking truth from facts and complying with laws and regulations, worked with relevant units to do a thorough and meticulous investigation of expropriation and demolition and actively promoted project construction. On the morning of December 1st, at the construction site of Huangqiao Avenue Extra Large Bridge of Changyichang Railway in Yingxiongling Village, Huangjinyuan Street, Wangcheng District, Changsha City, the builders are using ballastless track laying units to lay the first pair of long rails, which indicates that Changyichang Railway construction has entered the key stage of track laying.
After the opening of Changyichang high-speed railway, all 14 cities and states in Hunan Province will be connected with high-speed railway, forming a high-speed railway loop.
Industry "out of the circle" changes not only the speed.
Zhang Jihuai High-speed Railway, a tourist passage connecting several world-famous cultural heritages and natural heritages in series.
Zhang Jihuai High-speed Railway connects Fenghuang Ancient City, Laosicheng, furong town, Aizhai Eighteen Cave Dehang Grand Canyon, Ganzhou Ancient City, Hongshilin, Zuolong Gorges and other scenic spots in Xiangxi, radiating and driving Longshan Liye, Bamian Mountain, Jabala, Huayuan Border Town Tea Cave, Luxipu Ancient Town, Baojing Lvdong Mountain and other scenic spots. It is a scenic spot bearing heavy historical humanities and beautiful landscape poetry.
It’s not just the speed that changes. Zhang Jihuai’s high-speed rail is still a "golden link". It connects Qianzhangchang Railway, Jiaoliu Railway, Yuhuai Railway, Shanghai-Kunming High-speed Railway and Huaishaoheng Railway, connects major cities and states in western Hunan Province, and radiates the whole Wuling Mountain area. After the completion and opening to traffic, the "friends circle" of cities in western Hunan has become more and more closely linked, and the flow of people, logistics and business will be further unblocked, and the agricultural tourism and cultural tourism will be further integrated, which will inject vigorous strength into local cultural tourism, rural revitalization and undertaking industrial transfer.
"When the high-speed rail rings, there are two thousand gold." Facing the new opportunities given by the opening of high-speed rail, Jishou City will focus on building ten industrial demonstration parks and comprehensive processing zones of agricultural products, such as golden tea, high-quality citrus and characteristic farming in western Hunan, and accelerate the formation of modern agricultural industrial structure. With the opening of Zhangjihuai Railway, the cultural tourism industry in western Hunan has become even more powerful, and the high-speed rail economy has become the biggest feature, advantage and brand of western Hunan.
Get through the "aorta" and witness the development speed. The railway network extends in all directions, which not only shortens the time, but also extends the radius of development.
Changyi-Changchun high-speed railway is an important part of the national "eight vertical and eight horizontal" high-speed railway network from Xiamen to Chongqing and Hohhot to Nanning. The line starts from Changde City in the west, passes through Yiyang City, and is introduced into Changsha West Station, Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Intercity, with a total length of 157 kilometers. By the end of November, 2021, Hunan Railway Investment Kailai, a Changyichang high-speed rail project, had completed an investment of 13.3 billion yuan.
Changyichang High-speed Railway is located in the Changsha-Yiyang-Changde urban industrial cluster of Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration in Hunan Province. With the opening of Changyichang High-speed Railway, the tourism resources along the route will be continuously released, and more travel needs will emerge. The scattered tourism resources will be re-integrated and connected in series through Changyichang High-speed Railway to create a new "Northwest Hunan Tourism Circle".
Moreover, the accelerated integration of Changde and Yiyang into the "Changsha Economic Circle", further promoting the integration of Changsha, Zhuzhou and Xiangtan urban agglomerations, and expanding the regional advantages of "One Belt and One Department" in our province are of great significance to implementing the major regional development strategies of countries such as the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the urban agglomerations in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and practicing the strategic positioning and mission of "three highs and four innovations".
Hunan railway network, which connects north and south vertically, crosses east and west, has a reasonable layout and smooth connection, has been continuously expanded, and a big channel and service strategy has been built, so that the time and space distance of "connecting the river to the sea, going abroad and going to the world" has been greatly reduced, and the "golden route" presented on Hunan’s economic map has become increasingly clear.

From the Guangdong-Han Railway a hundred years ago to the opening of Zhang Jihuai’s high-speed railway today, a touching historical moment has been frozen in the history of Hunan Railway, and a new Hunan with both development speed and people’s livelihood temperature has gradually been outlined.
